As part of its urban modernisation and sustainability agenda, the Government of Uganda is prioritising the deployment of clean and efficient public lighting infrastructure in its newly formed cities. In alignment with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 7 and SDG 11), the government, through NEPB, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the Ministry of Local Government, is engaging a private contractor to supply and support the installation of solar-powered street lighting systems.
This project aims to enhance urban security, promote nighttime commerce, reduce traffic-related incidents, and improve the overall aesthetic and safety of public spaces—while simultaneously reducing dependency on the national grid and promoting renewable energy adoption. The contractor will be responsible for the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of solar street lights, along with provision for training and maintenance support.
The project will be rolled out in phases across selected new cities, focusing on high-traffic areas, markets, residential neighborhoods, and strategic public infrastructure zones.
